Hey folks, Harry here... Sometimes working on an epic ain´t easy. Specially when you have so much passion involved, not only by the filmmakers, but the fans themselves. About two weeks ago I heard that the Saruman/Grima work had been edited out of RETURN OF THE KING. My immediate reaction was... "OUCH!" I mean, Christopher Lee has owned in each of the 2 Lord of the Rings movies we´ve seen thus far, but also... His presence has been iconic and classy in a way that defies description. I figured that this news would best be left to Peter to address in interviews once the film began screening, as I was sure it was a decision he did not relish making.

¡Hola Amigos! Aquí Harry... Algunas veces trabajar en una epopeya no es fácil. Especialmente cuando hay tanta pasión implicada, no sólo de los que hacen las películas, sino también de los propios fans. Hace unas dos semanas, oí que la parte Saruman/Grima había sido sacada de ERDR. Mi reacción inmediata fue... "UYYYY".  Quiero decir, Christopher Lee ha estado en las dos ediciones de las películas que hemos visto hasta ahora, pero también... su presencia ha sido como un icono y un clásico de un calibre indescriptible. Me imaginé que sería mejor dejar que PJ hablase de estas decisiones en entrevistas una vez que la película se proyectase, ya que estaba seguro que no fue una decisión que hizo con gusto.

Then, this week... the story began to leak further. No longer just to me, but Moriarty caught wind of it, and as Moriarty often does... He became profoundly upset. Afterall... Moriarty is EVIL - his favorite characters are EVIL. He decided to continue poking around and he found a very direct source that told him that the cut was made due to pressures from New Line & that Peter was extremely upset about this and was fighting New Line left and right.

Pero, esta semana.... La historia se hizo mayor. No sólo fui yo, también Moriarty se enteró de esta decisión, como suele hacer a menudo... Se cabreó mucho. Después de todo, Moriarty es MALO. Sus personajes favoritos son MALOS. Decidió seguir indagando y encontró una fuente muy directa que le contó que el corte se debía a presiones de New Line y que Peter estaba muy cabreado y peleando con New Line todo lo que podía.

Apparently this was what Moriarty was talking about in chat recently and at 2am in the morning two days ago, I got a call from Quint going, "What are going to do about Goddamn NEW LINE and this FUCKING debacle?" I was like... "What debacle?" Then Quint filled me in on what Moriarty had learned.

Aparentemente, de ésto estaba hablando Moriarty recientemente en un chat, y  a las 2 de la mañana hace dos días recibí una llamada de Quint, "¿Qué está ocurriendo con los malditos de New Line y con su jodida debacle?" Me quedé... "¿Qué debacle?" Entonces Quint me contó lo que Moriarty había sabido.

My reaction was... BULLSHIT. For the last 3 weeks, Peter Jackson and I have been trading emails regarding some collectibles that pretty much rule the world. I can´t buy them, because I know he exists, and so all I can do is watch as he buys them and wish to god I had more money than Peter Jackson. (A primary reason for me becoming a Producer - there´s Geek shit I need to be able to outbid Pete on!) Through these conversations, Peter has let slip how things are going, steps he´s made through the process, and how at long last it is coming to an end and he´s been delighted with the final film.

Mi reacción fue... VAYA MIERDA. Durante las últimas 3 semanas, PJ y yo estuvimos intercambiando mails a propósito de algunos de los coleccionables. No puedo comprarlos, porque sé que existe, y por tanto lo único que puedo hacer es mirar según los compra y pedir a Dios tener más dinero que PJ (una razón primordial por la que deseo ser productor- hay mierda friki que necesito conseguir por encima de PJ). A lo largo de esas conversaciones, Peter fue contando qué tal iban las cosas, los pasos que iba dando, y como todo iba llegando hacia su final, y lo encantado que estaba con la última película.

In addition to Pete, I´ve been in AOL IM´s, e-mail exchanges, AOL Voice IM´s and even those groovy camera thingees with folks in New Zealand that have seen ROTK and talk about being in tears for an hour of the film and how everyone feels it´s the very best of the series by a very large factor.

Además de con Pete, he estado en los intercambios de mails de AOL IM, AOL Voice IM e incluso esos trucos de cámara enloquecidos con tíos de Nueva Zelanda que han visto ERDR y que hablan de haber llorado durante una hora en la película y de cómo todo el mundo pensó que era la mejor película de lejos.

HOWEVER, I was concerned with Moriarty in Open-Chats... and the mere charge of New Line issues upon RETURN OF THE KING to write Peter and directly ask about all of this, and Peter... knowing very well that this was volatile news... Not in any other sense than there will be a certain level of fan disappointment at the loss of Christopher Lee´s scenes in RETURN OF THE KING, but he didn´t want to see the record wrong on how all of this came to be. Here´s what Peter wrote me....

Sin embargo, estaba preocupado con Moriarty en los Open-Chats... y la acusación sobre New Line acerca de ERDR, lo suficiente como para escribir a Peter y preguntarle directamente... sabiendo claramente que son noticias explosivas... En el sentido en que habrá un cierto nivel de desilusión por parte de los fans ante la ausencia de las escenas de Christopher Lee en ERDR, pero él no quería ver noticias falsas sobre como se tomó la decisión. Esto es lo que Peter me escribió...

We have decided to save the Saruman sequence for the DVD. It´s a great little scene. 7 mins long. Chris is wonderful, as usual. Brad is in about 6 shots. It was a film maker decision - nothing to do with the studio.

Hemos decidido dejar la secuencia de Saruman para el DVD. Es una gran pequeña escena. 7 minutos de duración. Chris está magnífico, como siempre. Brad está en unas 6 tomas. Fue una decisión del director- nada que ver con el estudio.

The problem is that the sequence was originally shot for The Two Towers, as it is in the book. Since The Two Towers couldn´t sustain a 7 min "wrap" after Helm´s Deep, we thought it would be a good idea to save it for the beginning of the Return of the King. The trouble is, when we viewed various ROTK cuts over the last few weeks, it feels like the first scenes are wrapping last year´s movie, instead of starting the new one. We felt it got ROTK off to an uncertain beginning, since Saruman plays no role in the events of ROTK (we don´t have the Scouring later, as the book does), yet we dwell in Isengard for quite a long time before our new story kicks off.

El problema es que la escena fue originalmente rodada para las Dos Torres, como ocurre en el libro.  Pero puesto que LDT no podía aguantar 7 minutos de "desarrollo" después del Abismo de Helm, pensamos que sería una buena idea dejarlo para el principio de ERDR. El problema fue que, al ver varios cortes de ERDR en las últimas semanas, parecía que las primeras escenas terminaban la película del año pasado, en lugar de empezar una nueva. Sentimos que le daba a ERDR un principio poco claro, ya que Saruman no tiene un papel en los sucesos de ERDR (no tenemos Saneamiento al final, como ocurre en el libro), y sin embargo nos demorábamos en Isengard durante un rato antes de que nuestra nueva historia empezase.

We reluctantly made the decision to save this sequence for the DVD. The choice was made on the basis that most people will assume that Saruman was vanquished by the Helm´s Deep events, and Ent attack. We can now crack straight into setting up the narrative tension of ROTK, which features Sauron as the villian.

A regañadientes, decidimos dejar esta escena para el DVD. La elección se hizo basándonos en que mucha gente asumirá que Saruman fue derrotado por los acontecimientos del Abismo de Helm y por el ataque de los Ents. Ahora podemos entrar directamente en la narración de ERDR, el la cual Sauron es el villano.

It was a very similar situation to last year when we decided to take a nice Boromir/Denethor flashback out of The Two Towers, and put it in the DVD. It was causing us pacing problems in the theatrical version, but with the Extended Cut just coming out now, fans can see this great little scene. Thank God for DVD, since it does mean that a version of the movie, which has different pacing requirements, can be released later. The Saruman sequence will definately be a highlight of the Extended ROTK DVD.

Es una situación muy semejante a la del año pasado, cuando decidimos sacar fuera de LDT un hermoso flashback Boromir/Denethor, y ponerlo en el DVD. Nos causaba problemas de cadencia en la versión cine, pero con la versión extendida que justo saldrá ahora, los fans podrán ver esta pequeña gran escena. Gracias sean dadas a Dios por el DVD, ya que permite que una versión de la película, con diferente ritmo, pueda salir posterioremente. La secuencia de Saruman será definitivamente el punto álgido de la versión extendida de ERDR.

We have a lot of great DVD material this time around. As we crafted the movie, we reduced it from an over 4 hour running time, down to 3.12 (without credits - about 8 mins long). This was done by us. There were no studio cutting notes. We now have a movie with a pace that fells ok for it´s theatrical release. One more week to go. We are nearly there. Will we still be standing? It´s going to be a close run thing.

Tenemos mucho material magnífico para el DVD esta vez. Según construíamos la película, la redujimos de unas 4 horas a 3.12 (sin créditos, unos 8 minutos). Lo hicimos nosotros. No hubo presiones para cortar del estudio. Ahora tenemos una película con un ritmo que parece adecuado para su proyección en cines. Una semana más. Casi estamos. ¿seguiremos aguantando? Va a ser muy duro.

A week to go? The news about New Line making the cuts themselves had instantly struck me wrong, because I knew that New Line wasn´t supposed to take possession of the film till November 1st. However, I had found out that 11 days before that time, Peter had added, I believe it was 12 visual effects shots for the Minas Tirith battles, and I had heard it was going to put them past their deadline a bit... Well, now it´ll be 2 weeks past that date, which means that Next Friday... New Line will finally take over possession of the print, then about a 2 months of work will be squeezed into a month - as prints are created for world consumption. Wonder how wet these things will be by the time they hit theaters?

¿Una semana más? Las noticias de que New Line estaba haciendo los cortes por su cuenta me sonó a falsa inmediatamente, porque sabía que se suponía que New Line no tomaría posesión de la película hasta el 1 de noviembre. Sin embargo, descubrí que 11 días antes de esa fecha, Peter añadió, creo, 12 efectos visuales de las batallas de Minas Tirith, y oí que se iba a pasar un poco de la fecha final... Bueno, ahora serán dos semanas después de la fecha límite, lo que significa el próximo viernes... New Line finalmente tomará posesión de la versión final, por lo que unos dos meses de trabajo se tendrán que comprimir en un mes, las versiones finales para consumo mundial. Me pregunto cómo estarán para cuando tengan que estrenarse en los cines.

Anyway, that´s the truth about Saruman and his scenes in RETURN OF THE KING, straight from Derek´s mouth! A hard decision, one of many in the making of an epic.

Bueno, ésta es la verdad acerca de Saruman y sus escenas en ERDR, directamente de la boca de Derek. Una dura decisión, una de las muchas que hay que tomar al crear una epopeya.
